Author: Russ Janklow

As summer weather starts to hit in the Midwest, more and more drivers are out on the road to get to the travel destination of their choice. With the greater amount of drivers out on the road, comes the increased risk of drunk drivers sharing these busier highways. As drunk drivers continue to cause destruction, it’s important to know your options of how a personal injury lawyer can help you or your loved ones fight any injuries or wrongful deaths from an alcohol-related accident.

Drunk driving, also known as alcohol-impaired driving, is one of the largest threats drivers face each and every year. Even as numbers of accidents and injuries fluctuate with time, the lesson remains the same – drunk driving claims lives.

Before sharing some of the startling statistics that drivers face, there are some important facts to understand about drunk driving. Did you know that drunk driving is often a symptom of a larger problem, such as alcohol misuse and abuse? (NHTSA) Alcohol-impaired motor vehicle crashes also cost more than an estimated $37 billion annually in the USA (NHTSA). Not only are drunk driving accidents expensive in terms of insurance and vehicle repair, but they cost lives.

According to the United States Drunk Driving Car Accident Statistics Report from 2009, three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some point in their lives. Of all fatal accidents, 32% percent were a result of alcohol-impaired drivers. Perhaps, most heartbreaking of all, is the fact that drunk drivers killed more than 181 children in 2009.
